History Repeats Itself: Measles Outbreak

In 2006, there was a large outbreak of the Mumps in the midwestern states.  At the same time, my son Miles contracted an autoimmune disorder called Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP) from his MMR vaccine.  Package insert adverse reactions listed this complication and unfortunately it happened to my kid. (Listed at the bottom)

I spent the months after he was diagnosed reading literally everything there was to read about vaccines.  From every source on all sides of the debate.  I thought a lot about the risks/benefits of vaccinations.

One thing was very clear.  The media and CDC blamed unvaccinated people for spreading the Mumps.  All of a sudden, the mumps was a very big deal and had horrible side effects like meningitis and sterility and it was all blamed on people not getting two doses of the MMR.

Well it is interesting to revisit some of the newer findings regarding the Mumps efficacy 13 years later. And to revisit those old news stories, that thanks to the internet, are available with just a google search.

Here is one excerpt from the NVIC that contradicts what we now know:

"MS. MANNING: Thank you very much. Dr.Gerberding, I am sorry, but I could not hear the first question that you were asked from the room, and I think it had to do with a waning immunity question. If you do not mind, we have seen waning immunity with other vaccines like the pertussis vaccine, and I was just wondering if there is any kind of blood testing or serologic testing going on in the communities there to see if there is a waning immunity.
Then a second question that I have is, is there any evidence that this is spreading by people who are asymptomatic? Is there asymptomatic spreading? Thank you.
DR. GERBERDING: (FUN FACT, Julie Gerberding is now an executive VP at Merck, but this interview was when she worked for the CDC,  Lots of people shuffle through jobs at the CDC and Big Pharma companies) In terms of waning immunity, we have no evidence from any of the information we have so far or from historical experience that waning immunity plays any part. People who receive two doses of mumps vaccine just sometimes simply do not respond to it. Their immunologic system just does not regard that as a source of stimulation to their immune system. If waning immunity were a primary problem, we would expect much older people to be affected, at least those who did not have mumps when they were children. So we are looking into this as one of several possibilities, but I think right now what we know about this vaccine's efficacy, what we know about the undervaccinated people in this age cohort, and what we know about the sociology of life in some of these community settings, we have ample explanation for why the virus is spreading the way it is."
In 2019 we know that the mumps vaccine is only about 88% effective (credit Paul Offit with this number so we know this is best case scenario).  We also know that it doesn't confer lasting immunity.  Mumps outbreaks are not even news anymore since we can't blame it on the unvaccinated population.  Outbreaks are commonplace and average numbers of cases the past three or four years are between 2000-6000.  Also in the past decade,  two whistleblower research scientists who worked for Merck say that Merck scientists falsified their numbers to make the vaccines look more effective, particularly Mumps.  So that was interesting as well.  Details from the NVIC here.

Excerpt from another article:
"Relators assert that they witnessed firsthand both improper testing procedures of mumps vaccines, as well as a subsequent falsification of documents for submission to the FDA. According to allegations, Merck engaged in an elaborate cover-up scheme in order to keep its mumps vaccines on the market. Allegedly, beginning in the 1990’s, Merck devised “Protocol 007” as its sham testing regime in order to “report efficacy of 95 percent or higher regardless of the vaccine’s true efficacy.” Specifically, Merck developed its own attenuated strain of the mumps virus – which was unlike the “wild type” mumps virus to which actual children would be exposed – and testing the vaccine against the weaker version of the virus.
The company also allegedly added animal antibodies to tests in order to boost efficacy ratings, despite knowing that the human immune system would never actually produce similar antibodies. In sum, the complaint alleges that the testing protocol for Merck’s mumps vaccine “did not in any way correspond to, correlate with, or represent real life.”"

Basically the same thing happened with pertussis.  Anti-vaxxers were accused of being the root of the problem, even though vaccination rates were high.  Several news stories made a big point of this.  According to the CDC outbreaks keep happening mainly because the vaccine just doesn't confer lasting immunity.  The fully vaccinated relatives are likely the ones transmitting the disease, so they created a booster for caregivers.

Wonder how long it will be before we find out that the Measles vaccine isn't that effective either?  How many boosters are adults going to be getting throughout our lives?  Chicken Pox also isn't lasting.  More people getting shingles now because the wild virus circulating used to provide a booster effect and now that isn't happening.  So now boosters for Mumps, Chicken Pox/Shingles, Pertussis, and also Hep B wears off at 20 years (about 20 years old, right when someone might actually need it).  So it looks like most of us are probably undervaccinated by todays terms.   We are all looking at lifelong booster shots.  Wonder what the results of that will be!  One thing that concerns me is that my girls could have their chicken pox vaccines wear off or not work (only 86% effective anyway) during their childbearing years and end up with chicken pox during pregnancy when it can cause birth defects.

I'm appalled that forced vaccination with no option for exemptions is being promoted in some states.  Thankfully I think Utah is less likely to be a nanny state.  However it still concerns me that this is on the table in our country.

I believe in giving parents solid, unbiased information and letting them choose what gets injected into their child's body.  The vaccination recommendations change over time with new information.  We know that genetics and other information makes the risk/benefit analysis different for each child.  The community health goals cannot override parents knowledge and experience of their individual child.

ADVERSE REACTIONS to MMR:
The following adverse reactions are listed in decreasing order of severity, without regard to causality, within each body system category and have been reported during clinical trials, with use of the marketed vaccine, or with use of monovalent or bivalent vaccine containing measles, mumps, or rubella:Body as a Whole
Panniculitis; atypical measles; fever; syncope; headache; dizziness; malaise; irritability.
Cardiovascular System
Vasculitis.
Digestive System
Pancreatitis; diarrhea; vomiting; parotitis; nausea.
Endocrine System
Diabetes mellitus.
Hemic and Lymphatic System
Thrombocytopenia (see W ARNINGS, leukocytosis.
Immune System
Thrombocytopenia);
purpura;
regional
lymphadenopathy;
Anaphylaxis and anaphylactoid reactions have been reported as well as related phenomena such as angioneurotic edema (including peripheral or facial edema) and bronchial spasm in individuals with or without an allergic history.
6
Musculoskeletal System
Arthritis; arthralgia; myalgia.
Arthralgia and/or arthritis (usually transient and rarely chronic), and polyneuritis are features of infection with wild-type rubella and vary in frequency and severity with age and sex, being greatest in adult females and least in prepubertal children. This type of involvement as well as myalgia and paresthesia, have also been reported following administration of MERUVAX II.
Chronic arthritis has been associated with wild-type rubella infection and has been related to persistent virus and/or viral antigen isolated from body tissues. Only rarely have vaccine recipients developed chronic joint symptoms.
Following vaccination in children, reactions in joints are uncommon and generally of brief duration. In women, incidence rates for arthritis and arthralgia are generally higher than those seen in children (children: 0-3%; women: 12-26%),{17,56,57} and the reactions tend to be more marked and of longer duration. Symptoms may persist for a matter of months or on rare occasions for years. In adolescent girls, the reactions appear to be intermediate in incidence between those seen in children and in adult women. Even in women older than 35 years, these reactions are generally well tolerated and rarely interfere with normal activities.
Nervous System
Encephalitis; encephalopathy; measles inclusion body encephalitis (MIBE) (see CONTRAINDICATIONS); subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE); Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS); acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM); transverse myelitis; febrile convulsions; afebrile convulsions or seizures; ataxia; polyneuritis; polyneuropathy; ocular palsies; paresthesia.
Encephalitis and encephalopathy have been reported approximately once for every 3 million doses of M-M-R II or measles-, mumps-, and rubella-containing vaccine administered since licensure of these vaccines.
The risk of serious neurological disorders following live measles virus vaccine administration remains less than the risk of encephalitis and encephalopathy following infection with wild-type measles (1 per 1000 reported cases).{58,59}
In severely immunocompromised individuals who have been inadvertently vaccinated with measles- containing vaccine; measles inclusion body encephalitis, pneumonitis, and fatal outcome as a direct consequence of disseminated measles vaccine virus infection have been reported (see CONTRAINDICATIONS). In this population, disseminated mumps and rubella vaccine virus infection have also been reported.
There have been reports of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) in children who did not have a history of infection with wild-type measles but did receive measles vaccine. Some of these cases may have resulted from unrecognized measles in the first year of life or possibly from the measles vaccination. Based on estimated nationwide measles vaccine distribution, the association of SSPE cases to measles vaccination is about one case per million vaccine doses distributed. This is far less than the association with infection with wild-type measles, 6-22 cases of SSPE per million cases of measles. The results of a retrospective case-controlled study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggest that the overall effect of measles vaccine has been to protect against SSPE by preventing measles with its inherent higher risk of SSPE.{60}
Cases of aseptic meningitis have been reported to VAERS following measles, mumps, and rubella vaccination. Although a causal relationship between the Urabe strain of mumps vaccine and aseptic meningitis has been shown, there is no evidence to link Jeryl LynnTM mumps vaccine to aseptic meningitis.
Respiratory System
Pneumonia; pneumonitis (see CONTRAINDICATIONS); sore throat; cough; rhinitis.
Skin
Stevens-Johnson syndrome; erythema multiforme; urticaria; rash; measles-like rash; pruritis.
Local reactions including burning/stinging at injection site; wheal and flare; redness (erythema); swelling; induration; tenderness; vesiculation at injection site; Henoch-Schönlein purpura; acute hemorrhagic edema of infancy.

Special Senses — Ear
Nerve deafness; otitis media.
Special Senses — Eye
Retinitis; optic neuritis; papillitis; retrobulbar neuritis; conjunctivitis.

Soren's 7th Birthday!

How can he be 7?  I really can't believe it.  I went to pick up his birthday balloons when I realized at checkout I had a big 6 instead of a 7.  How is he seven?  It just can't be that long since he was born.

He still feels like my baby.  I was rocking him in the glider the other day before bed.  He doesn't ask me to hold him while I read him a story anymore.  I have to coax him into it and his little body is so lanky and long for that glider.  Its bittersweet!  I love watching him grow up though.

He LOVES his little neighborhood friends.  Yesterday his friends mom sent me a photo of Soren and Thomas sitting on their playhouse and reading their books from the book fair.  He LOVES those book fair books.  He loves hot lunch and I let him get it.  So I gave him some money to put on his lunch account and he looks at me and says, if the lady at school tells me I don't need all of this I'm going to buy some more stuff at the book fair!  Ha! No.  He has a lot of money saved up from past birthday and Christmas gifts.  He just likes to have the actual money more than he wants to spend it.

Things that are unique about Soren:
Loves Lego building!
Loves math and is great with numbers
Loves to color and is actually really good at it.  My girls love to joke that he is better than they are and they are not wrong.
He loves making perler bead creations and his colors and patterns are so impressive to me.
He's really calm--for the most part.  He's never been one for a lot of tantrums.  Maybe because he is so much younger than the rest of the kids?
He's cautious and deliberate.  If you tell him something isn't safe, he won't do it.  (Yay)
Also, he LOVES climbing and is super strong and really good at it for his age.  He has these cute little muscles.  He has no fear when it comes to climbing.
He's more picky than my other kids were but he is eating more and more things now.
He also doesn't like sweet things that much.  When we brought home his birthday cake he had me scrape off the frosting.
He talks a lot at school and is very social at school
He loves clothes and especially getting dressed up for church with his tie and suit
I rarely have to help him match when he dresses himself
He wants to be an artist when he grows up
He is going to start basketball and lacrosse this year
I love his big smile.  He is such a cutie.
He still likes tongs and those grabber type toys a lot
Greta's biggest fan (Greta is our cat)

The main thing he wanted for his birthday: REAL binoculars

We went to Tsunami for dinner where Soren loves his noodles kid meal.  And we all love the sushi!

Monet's Junior Prom

Junior Prom for Monet!

She was asked by Dan, who has been her friend for several years.  She was so excited to be in the same group with her other friends too.  I love these kids so much!  They both looked so great.

He asked her with a dump truck and a sign with some buns that said "Can I Haul Your Buns to Prom?"  Lol.

She answered him with In N Out and said, "I'm In for Prom."

Dan's mom made the boutonniere and corsage.  They were so pretty!  I loved those pale pink roses.

They went to dinner downtown near the dance and one of the older sisters of the boys is a photographer so they got these awesome photos.  So lucky!  The dance was at the capital.

She had such a great time!

Favorites from Conference

Wasn’t conference so cool?  I really loved the talks.  My favorite was Renlunds: Abound with Blessings.  I loved the imagery of the match laying next to the fire.  Sometimes all we have to do is START!  Activate our faith, pray and ask for help.  There is so much potential in that woodpile but we need to just light the match to get it going.  I loved that.

I also really liked how later he talked about creating homes that are like fortresses.  I’ve been feeling vulnerable in that department lately.  We need to take action.  Quentin Cook also mentioned our homes being a refuge, sanctuary of faith.  If we focus on love for the Savior, then influence of the adversary will be diminished.

Another talk I really loved was by Kyle McKay and how he said that “Immediate help” comes to those who call out.  We don’t always have our trial removed, but he gives us hope and the ability to endure.  I've had some personal experiences with this lately.

I loved Nelson’s phrase: “Do the spiritual work, and please, do it now, time is running out.”  Wow.

Sharon Eubank:  “I will ease the burdens that are put upon their shoulders. . .”  He will pull the yoke and make our burdens light.

These were all my favorites from Conference!

Alexa: Do My Homework

Kids these days are so high tech.  I was laughing a few weeks ago because I received a text message from Soren's teacher about how the kids were going to do a report on an animal and they had a worksheet with questions they needed to look up on the computer.

So I asked Soren about it and he responded that he was already done.

Really? When did you do this?  How did you do this yourself?  Wondering this because I know he isn't as literate as my previous children were at that age and doesn't use the computer much either.  He looked at me and said that he just asked Alexa all the questions and didn't need the computer at all.

Sure enough, he had it all done.  Ha!

So I asked Alexa the questions, "Alexa: how many inches is a bocat? How fast can a bobcat run?"

"A bobcat is between 22 and 36 inches can reach 34.8 mph" in case you were wondering.

GNO with Simone! Michael Jackson Cirque Du Soleil Show

Simone loves Michael Jackson.  Its pretty funny to see the next generation start discovering all the songs we loved when we were kids.

She's also a Billy Joel fan.  So thats fun!

Anyway, our original spring break plan included a few days in Vegas.  But Simone had a comp that Saturday so I thought I would fly home early with her.  Turns out, Monet also had a meet.  So Jared took her and the other kids and we all went home early and wasted our great hotel room!  Oh well.

Anyway,  Simone and I had the place to ourselves!  We decided to go see the Cirque Du Soleil Michael Jackson One show.  It was soooo fun!

We also hit Shake Shack, which was fun!  We had to practically close our eyes on the strip.  Haha!  She was very shocked by the scantily clad ladies in their performing feathery weird outfits.

The best part of the show was the guys doing these flips on a slackline!  It was so cool.  There were actually a bunch of songs I'd never heard and I loved them!  It was so fun to come home and make a spotify playlist for some kitchen jam sessions.

Also, I always loved the lean MJ does in his Smooth Criminal video.  The Cirque dancers did it too.  I was curious, and looked it up.  How is that possible even?  Well, special boots that attach to bolts in the stage is how!  Makes so much more sense.  How much time did I waste trying to do that when I was like 9.  Haha!

My friend Kim and I used to play Michael Jackson and Kevin Bacon when we were kids.  She got a super cool jacket even.  It is so funny to think about that now.

Sport and Speed Comps for Simone

Simone started Sport Climbing season just a few weeks ago.  She has never belayed or climbed with ropes.  So this was pretty fun to learn something new.  Ropes courses are longer and much higher than her bouldering.  She says her arms get really "pumpy" and her veins start popping and her legs start shaking.  This is a workout for sure.

Her first comp was at the Quarry in Provo.  She came in first place in her age group!  Yay Simone!

Coach Palmer who is a fantastic coach

Second comp was at Momentum in Sandy where she came in 5th!  Her talented Momentum teammates took the first five spots.  Pretty cool to see the 1/2/3/4/5 place all Momentum girls!  They have a really strong team.

She says she needs to work on her footwork and on her "beta" which is the way they figure out how they are going to climb the wall.  She's super strong so her coaches told her that she just muscles through some problems when better beta and footwork would be really helpful.  So she's going to work on that.

This is LA

Miles does a lot of research on shoes for his shoe selling business.  So it was super fun for him to go to a few stores in LA that he has seen a lot online.  One of them was "Flight Club."

They were really cool stores!  There was a big "drop" at the Supreme Store that day.  So he didn't make an appointment and there was a line out the door.  So we didn't go inside the actual Supreme store, but we weren't buying anything anyway so it was fun to just peek inside.

Loved meeting Chase Mills.  He was entertaining the people in the very long Supreme line that wrapped around the block.  He was very clever!  Simone was impressed that he doesn't curse and thought that the people in Vegas we saw could learn a thing or two!

Best part of this excursion for me was the Mexican fruit stand across the street!  Yum.  Love these places so much.  Why don't we have more fruit stands?  Why don't we eat lime and chili on a regular basis?  It just doesn't make any sense!  Best food all week was the coconut, watermelon and mango.

LA was fun and Miles really loved driving around the city and wants to live in the city someday.  I can see it!

This guy: Chase Mills.  So funny!  What a big nice smile.

Soren's Sandcastle

He hunted for shells ALL Day!  So we had to build a super cool sandcastle to use the shells on.  We didn't have any shovels so we used bamboo sticks to dig.  And it was so fun to build a moat and tunnel.  Isn't that the best feeling when you dig on both sides and the finally connect?  We put his sand dollars on front since those ones are special.  We forgot to take them in when we left and someone else got them.  So Soren was sad about that!  But it was still cool that he was the one that found them.

He was very particular about how I put the shells on the sandcastle.  He INSISTED that I wash them first.  Haha.  We've got another little Monet on our hands.  Neatfreaks.

California SUPERBLOOM!

We drove a long way to see these flowers!  Actually, we were only about an hour out of the way and it was such a pretty drive!  I love California Poppies a lot and was so glad that Monet really wanted to see them too and that no one complained too much about the extra trip.

Also, this is Monet with zero makeup, and no hair done.  It was super windy and she looks so pretty.  Lucky!  The other kids were not interested in photos!  So I have maybe one of each!
